Martin O'Neill has demanded that, in spite of Seamus Coleman's Mr Nice Guy persona, he didn't mull over making the Everton wingback the new Republic of Ireland skipper.

With Robbie Keane and John O'Shea on the seat, Coleman wore the armband in the 1-0 surprise of Italy and the 2-1 annihilation to France in the Round of 16 at UEFA EURO 2016. Keane declared his global retirement taking after the competition, provoking O'Neill to make Coleman his perpetual captain heading into 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifying.

"In the event that Seamus strolled into this room here he would be extremely courteous," O'Neill disclosed to FAI TV. "He would be all around mannered and you would think he was very calm. On the field he is entirely unexpected. I saw these things at any rate even before he got to be chief. So it was no huge conviction-based move from my perspective making him skipper. I felt he was really normal and he has gone and demonstrated that."
